Oscars: We don't care if you're a woman! – The Journal de Montreal

Do you watch a movie with your eyes or with your ovaries?

Do you listen to a movie with your ears or with your testicles?

Hardly known, the nominations for the 2024 Oscars have already caused a scandal. “Bouhouhouhou, there are not enough women in directing”…

But we don't care! When you watch a film, are you interested in what the director has between his ears or between his legs?

TEKITOI?

Fun times. On the one hand, we are told that gender is fluid, that it is a social construction, that it is completely normal to go on a hunger strike to write, and that one considers oneself non-binary… but at the same time we analyze everything , everything, everything according to the binary categories man/woman! Tune in, damn it!

This year, of the ten films competing for the Best Picture Oscar, three are directed by women: Anatomy of a Fall (Justine Triet), Barbie (Greta Gerwig) and Past Lives (Celine Song).

We were quick to point out that this is the first time in Oscars history that this has happened.

Yeah, okay, but having said that, what did we say about the cinematographic quality of these films?

The problem for sex obsessives is that only France's Justine Triet is nominated for the Best Director category. She is only the eighth woman nominated in this category.

I would like to ask those who are tearing their shirts because neither Gerwig nor Song are nominated as directors who they would have left off the nominee list to make room for women.

Should we appoint Gerwig instead of Martin Scorsese, who created a masterpiece with “Killers of the Flower Moon”? Should we appoint Song instead of Christopher Nolan, who accomplished Oppenheimer's tour de force?

That's the problem with activists. They don't take into account that it's more important to look at talent than the seat of your pants.

They will say to me: “Why is Barbie in the running for Best Picture when its director is not one of the best directors?” The film is not a sure-fire success!”

As a matter of fact. However, there are ten nominations for Best Picture and only five nominations for Best Director. So mathematically there are five people who have signed the best films and who will be frustrated not to end up in the Best Director category… Bradley Cooper is not nominated for Maestro: That's not scandalous, is it ?

Since the nominations were announced, we've heard a lot about the “Barbie Scandal.” But if Greta Gerwig had been nominated for best director but Justine Triet wasn't, would the bullies have been just as angry?

MY BEAUTIFUL LION

Leonardo di Caprio is not nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for his masterful role in Killers of the Flower Moon. Leonard diCaprio! Not at the Oscars! But since he's just a man, isn't that a scandal?

Every year we criticize the Oscars, we are disappointed and angry about the Academy's decisions.

But it's not all the fault of the ugly patriarchy!
