Our children do not deserve a general strike –

At the end of the week, the joint union front demonstrated its power on the streets of Montreal with thousands of public sector union members and their family members.

Strike votes have been taking place almost everywhere in Quebec since last week. We hear that support for a general strike is extremely high – results of 93% and even 100%.

So if nothing happens at the discussion tables, the Common Front union members will very soon go on general strike.

Unfortunately, once again it is our children who have to pay the price.

The pandemic

Young people have been severely affected by the effects of the pandemic for more than two years.

We tried virtual school, but we saw the limitations of electronics. In addition, the educational content was reduced. The current school year is the first in which we return to all lessons as before the pandemic.

This normal return to school is already being disrupted by strikes to uphold work rules. A term that teachers don’t like, but which is nevertheless a reality.

No special back-to-school activities, no Halloween party and Christmas parties will be canceled if the new collective bargaining agreement is not signed.

In short, no fireworks.

On Tuesday, Treasury President Sonia LeBel said she was ready to reduce its sectoral demands. She called on unions to do the same.

“We in the unions do not have much interest in Ms. LeBel’s proposal, and that is unfortunate. »

We must find a way out and avoid a general strike at all costs.

Our children have been exemplary during the pandemic. Now they deserve a quality education. They are not allowed to return to spend their days at home.

So, Ms. LeBel and the unions, get along!
