The Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streamer has canceled its comedy series Our Flag Means Death after two seasons. David Jenkins created the pirate comedy with Rhys Darby and executive producer Taika Waititi.

“Although Max will not be releasing a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyful, hilarious and heartfelt stories told by creators David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted and Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy and all the amazing cast and crew brought to life. We also thank the dedicated fans who have embraced these stories and built an amazing, inclusive community around the show,” a spokesperson for Max said in a statement to .

The decision to wrap up the series comes after the Waititi-co-created series “Reservation Dogs” ends in 2023 and the prolific producer, actor and director’s other FX comedy, “What We Do in the Shadows,” later this year will end with their sixth season. Next up on TV is Waititi's Apple reboot of Time Bandits, starring Lisa Kudrow.

Praised for its queer storylines, Our Flag Means Death has an impressive 94 percent rating from critics and a 93 percent rating from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. The first season of the series consisted of 10 episodes and aired in March 2022. The renewal came with a shortened eight-episode series that ended in October.

Creator Jenkins shared a heartfelt post about the show's cancellation on Tuesday: “I am very sad that I will no longer be setting foot on Revenge with my friends, some of whom are now close to my family. But I couldn't be more grateful that I got to run the damn thing at all.” (Read the full post below.)

On the comedy front, Max recently handed out a second season renewal for Chuck Lorre's Bookie and announced that Hacks season 3 is expected to debut in the spring. Max's list of comedies also includes “And Just Like That,” “Rap Shit” (also awaiting word on a possible third season) and “The Sex Lives of College Girls.”
