Outaouais: He surprises a stranger drinking a glass of rum in his kitchen

A homeless Ottawa man who had just run off the road in the vehicle he had just stolen broke into the home of a resident in the Chelsea sector near Gatineau early Monday morning simply to sip a good glass of rum.

The unusual story happened early in the morning, around 4.15am, when the intruder was caught sitting at a table in a Chelsea man's home with a glass of rum.

The resident was able to remain calm and even chatted with his surprise guest.

“The resident called 911 to notify police of the situation. The man, who was not aggressive, identified himself as the owner and simply mentioned that it was his car [était] collapsed and looked for a place to go,” said the public security of the MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais.

When the police arrived on site, they arrested the 29-year-old suspect.

A brief investigation revealed that the homeless Ottawa man had stolen a vehicle earlier that night and then turned himself in in the Chelsea area.

He then drove off the road on Route 105.

Not knowing where to go on that freezing night, the homeless man reportedly walked for some time before simply entering a random house through the front door.

He would have gone straight to the kitchen to pour himself a glass of alcohol.

No one was injured at this event.

The suspect, who has a long criminal history, was scheduled to appear at the Gatineau courthouse Monday afternoon on various charges, including burglary.

Police took the opportunity to remind citizens of the importance of always locking their home doors.
