Outaouais: One person shot dead by police officer, BEI launches investigation

The Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI) launched an investigation Monday after a person was shot dead during an intervention by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

Around 11am Monday morning, SQ Police were called to intervene over a family dispute in Clarendon, Outaouais.

They reportedly applied for a firearms check prior to arrival, but the result was negative, the BEI said in a statement.

Once there, witnesses pointed out that the person was in the shed at the back of the house. When the police officers came towards her, she is said to have pointed a gun at them.

“A police officer would have drawn his gun and fired at the person who had fallen into the shed,” read the press release.

While we waited for the intervention group, a security perimeter was quickly set up. Shortly after 2:15 p.m., after all the necessary checks had been carried out, the person’s body was found in the shed.

“Five BEI investigators were tasked with investigating the circumstances of the engagement. “Given the circumstances of the incident, the support services of a police unit were required, namely the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM)”, the BEI mentioned, specifying that the investigation into the events had been launched before the police intervention also entrusted to the SPVM.
