Overcooked or undercooked rice: what to do? – The Journal de Montreal

Have you missed your rice that is too sticky? Rinse it and use it for soup. To prevent this problem, you can rinse the rice in cold water before cooking or add a piece of butter or a few drops of oil to the water.

Rice that seems too soft after cooking has been cooked in too much liquid or has been cooked for too long. Do not stir the rice while cooking as the starch released will make the rice sticky. If the rice grains are too hard or lumpy, it’s probably because you opened the lid while cooking.

For very white Japanese-style rice, add a squeeze of lemon or vinegar to the cooking water.

Rice cooked in tomato juice or orange juice requires a few minutes more cooking time to become tender because the acidity of the juice slows cooking.

Did you let the rice burn? Pour it into another pot and cover it with onion peels for about fifteen minutes. Remove the peels that have absorbed the pungent taste and smell of the smoke.

The rice that helps

  • Clean the coffee grinder by grinding a handful of rice in it. Remove residue with a brush.
  • To clean a thermos, baby bottle, or teapot, add a few grains of rice and a few drops of dish soap and shake the container to achieve complete cleaning. Rinse well.
  • Rice water, made by boiling a handful of rice in 1 liter of water, is great for adding some support to soft and unruly ends. Filter and allow to cool before use. Dry the lace flat without ironing.
  • To avoid bad smells in the suitcases that you are storing until your next vacation, put a handful of rice there, which will absorb moisture and cause mold.
