Drug trafficker Ovidio Guzmán López was extradited this Friday to the United States, where he will face drug trafficking charges, US Attorney General Merrick B. Garland confirmed. According to US media reports, the transfer was carried out by Interpol. Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán’s son was arrested on January 6 during an army operation in Jesús María, a small town in the state of Sinaloa, and has since been imprisoned in the high-security Altiplano prison. The Sinaloa Cartel offshoot led by Guzmán’s sons, who was convicted of drug trafficking in the United States, is accused of directing the production and transfer of fentanyl from Mexico to the north.
“Today, Ovidio Guzmán López, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, was extradited to the United States as a result of police cooperation between the United States and Mexico,” Garland said in a statement. “This action is the latest step in the Justice Department’s efforts to target all aspects of the cartel’s activities.” After several hours of speculation about the extradition, the Attorney General’s embassy confirmed the transfer. “I thank our colleagues in the Mexican government for this extradition. “The Department of Justice will continue to hold accountable those responsible for fueling the opioid epidemic that has devastated too many communities across the country,” he concluded. The brief message did not specify where in the United States Guzmán López was being transferred.
