Walcyr Carrasco even had difficulties in the first few months, but met Globo's expectations with Terra e Paixão. The nine o'clock soap opera boosted primetime ratings lowered by the failure of Travessia (2022) and had even more viewers last week than Pantanal (2022) 32.0 points compared to 29.8 points for the remake in the second last Year Chapter.
One of the main obstacles for the screenwriter was just imposed by the broadcaster. The story of Aline (Barbara Reis) spans more than 220 chapters, a milestone not seen in the title since Amor à Vida (2013) coincidentally written by the same Carrasco.
Due to some delays in the production of the Renascer remake, Globo even wanted to extend Terra e Paixão for another two weeks, but Walcyr didn't let up. His request was granted, particularly because the novelist wrote the chapters almost “in real time.”
To boost Ibope's ratings, the author brought out many of the twists that had already been predicted, such as the death of Daniel (Johnny Massaro). The strategy worked, but he had to invent a new series practically from scratch and without a front.
Not surprisingly, Carrasco called Thelma Guedes, who had already worked with him on Chocolate com Pimenta (2003) and Alma Gêmea (2005), to help him. The partnership once again brought results and even accredited the author of Cordel Encantado (2011) to the selected team producing plots for nine o'clock.
Terra e Paixão, marked more by stumbling blocks than successes, does not deserve to be Carrasco's last work for the noblest field. At 72 years old, the professional still has a lot of stamina to take on the mission. But she doesn't have to be as ungrateful as she was in her recent experience.
The writers have always asked Globo to shorten the length of their soap operas, also to avoid possible belly fat technical jargon for when nothing happens in the story. However, the decision has a direct impact on profits: the more chapters, the more the costs are diluted.
One way for management to reward Carrasco for Terra e Paixão's result is to ensure a slightly less inhospitable environment by putting him back in the nine o'clock slot. A smaller soap opera that wasn't exactly a failure would make life a lot easier for his team.
