Although Ozzy Osbourne is considered one of the pioneers of metal, the singer admits that he was never comfortable with the genre's label.
In a new interview with Spin, the Black Sabbath singer says, “Well, I've never been comfortable with the label that was given to me – 'metal.'” Ozzy Osbourne plays heavy music, but the bands that are [considérés comme metal] are really, really hard, and we’re all put in the same category.”
He explains that the metal label has influenced his musical approach: “When you're put in a certain box [genre], it can be very difficult to do something lighter, an acoustic piece or whatever. Back then it was just rock. And it’s still just rock music.”
Osbourne's legacy has long been cemented, with numerous awards and achievements underpinning his iconic status. The singer most recently won two Grammys for his 2022 album Patient Number 9.
A few months ago, Osbourne underwent his “final surgery,” and according to his son Jack, the procedure went “very well.” However, the latter also added that he did not see his father go on tour again.
Ozzy is currently working on a new album that he plans to record next year with producer Andrew Watt (who has worked on his recent solo releases). The upcoming album probably won't feature as many guests as its predecessors.
