Pablo González Casanova, prominent Mexican intellectual and great friend of Cuba, has died

The sociologist, political scientist and researcher held the highest position at the Autonomous University of Mexico and was a promoter of the founding of the Colleges of Sciences and Humanities (CCH)

Pablo González Casanova, former rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), in the period from 1970 to 1972 he died this Tuesday at the age of 101 in Tlalpan, Mexico City.

González Casanova was an important Mexican intellectual and a great friend of Cuba. Founder of the Humanity Defense Network. Cubadebate and the Round Table were honored to have him as one of their collaborators.

After learning of the former rector’s death, the Supreme House of Studies confirmed his death and published an obituary stressing that González Casanova was a “Highly distinguished university student, promoter of democracy in Mexico, bulwark of critical thinking and always committed to the best social channels.”

González Casanova, one of the closest associates of this publishing house, was born on February 11, 1922 in Toluca, State of Mexico. A sociologist, political scientist, and historian, he was a member of the Mexican Language Academy and the recipient of several awards and distinctions, including the 1984 National Award for Sciences and Arts.

In this newspaper, Don Pablo – as he was affectionately known by his friends and collaborators – published various articles in which he spoke about subjects such as the Cuban Revolution, the uprising of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) (an organization that considered him a his commanders ), among many other social and political issues.

UNAM indicated that the in-person events in honor of González Casova will be organized between today and tomorrow, so they could take place later this week.
