John Lynch has a lot of respect for new Giants manager Bob Melvin and the 49ers general manager was sad to see the longtime MLB captain leave his hometown San Diego Padres.
After Melvin was introduced as San Francisco’s new manager in a news conference at Oracle Park on Wednesday, Lynch joined KNBR 680’s “Murph & Mac” on Friday and was asked if Melvin had left San Diego for his Bay Area counterpart.
“I feel bad for my Padres because I think he’s a great manager,” Lynch said. “People would say, ‘If so, how could he have that squad and it didn’t work out?’ You hear the Warriors and us talking about connectivity and how everyone is connected. It didn’t seem like a front office and coaching staff that were connected down there. I’ve heard that Bob is just as easy to get along with as anyone, so I don’t know what the problem is. I think this is a win for the Giants.
“I’m sick for my Padres, but I think the Padres are growing on me. I always have to stick with my home team, will always support the Pads, but I’m happy for the Giants because I think they’re really (good manager). There are just so many retired baseball players that live down in San Diego that I see when I’m down there. I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about Bob Melvin. This doesn’t just mean being a nice guy, a I think it’s a big win for the Giants and I’m happy they have someone like that and see what they can do.”
Even though Melvin only led the Padres for two seasons, Lynch knew how influential he was as a leader and he’s glad he’s returning to the Bay Area.
With Melvin in San Francisco, it will only be a matter of time before Lynch becomes a full-time Giants fan.
