A world first for a Quebec chocolatier

As high-sugar foods get bad press, a local SME strikes a blow by creating an all-plant-based, sugar-free, organic chocolate, a world first.

“The number one enemy right now is sugar,” says Jean-René Lemire, co-founder of Theobroma Chocolat.

The entrepreneur and his partner Josée Vignault sensed the right thing three years ago when the federal government introduced nutritional labeling on food packaging.

Even if their old collections offered less sugar, the reflection begins. They discover the explosion of type 2 diabetes cases in Canada and the craze for sugar-free diets like the keto diet. But the idea also germinated in the family circle.

“When we first started, we consumed snacks every day. My children have often exceeded the recommended sugar levels after their snack,” explains the entrepreneur, who is also a father. The World Health Organization recommends 25 grams of sugar per day. With a few pieces of normal chocolate we already reach the recommended limit.

” Make the difference “

The entrepreneurial couple say they are “driven by ideas that can make a difference.”

Their chocolates were already fair trade, organic and contained as few ingredients as possible. But they want to push the mission further.

“If we make better products, the healthcare system will do much better and our children will be much healthier,” comments Mr. Lemire.

Chocolate manufacturers therefore decided in 2020 to develop an alternative unsweetened product that fits their values.

Two years of research

“It was a headache, it lasted more than two years. Our research and development team is not letting up,” the head of the medium-sized company is proud of having reached this point.

There are other so-called sugar-free products, but Mr. Lemire believes Theobroma Chocolat’s innovation is vastly superior. Sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose are synthetic products that have been linked to health problems and “destroy the taste of food.”

As for the new natural alternative stevia, “it doesn’t come close to the cassava fiber” that the company is using in its new formulation. The cassava ingredient is rich in natural fiber and would give the chocolate a unique flavor and creamy side. And it contains zero sugar.

The company’s other coup is a recipe that contains only three organic, purely plant-based ingredients: cocoa paste, cocoa butter and cassava fiber.

“The other players often have 7, 8, 9 ingredients,” compares Jean-René Lemire. But at Theobroma they want to highlight the quality and taste of pure and natural ingredients.

The University of Oregon has issued a statement condemning “offensive and shameful” chanting against Brigham Young University during a college football game between the two schools on Saturday.

Footage emerged of a group of fans chanting “F*** the Mormons” as Oregon defeated BYU at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, OR.

Oregon released a statement on Twitter on Sunday expressing their disapproval of the chant.

“The University of Oregon sincerely apologizes for an offensive and shameful chant emanating from the student department during yesterday’s game against Brigham Young University.

“These kinds of actions go against everything the university stands for and against the spirit of competition.

“We can and will do better as a campus community that has no place for hate, bias, or bigotry.”

The Pit Crew, the University of Oregon’s official student department, released a statement of its own Saturday night, distancing itself from the actions at their department.

“To all of the @BYUfootball fans in attendance at today’s game, we would like to apologize for the actions of the students in attendance.

“We do not condone or support hate speech against one’s own religion and we are ashamed of those who participated.”

It has not been updated on whether penalties have been imposed or whether specific students have been identified.

Although Kris Winter, the University of Oregon’s interim vice president for the department of student life, said in a statement that the school would be investigating.

“The university apologizes for the obnoxious chanting by some University of Oregon fans at today’s soccer game against Brigham Young University,” Winter said.

“There is no place for hate, prejudice, or bigotry at the University of Oregon. These actions are simply unacceptable.

“We will investigate and urge our students and the campus community to refuse to accept or tolerate this type of behavior.”

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox reacted strongly to the disrespectful chants, writing on Twitter Sunday: “Religious bigotry lives and is celebrated in Oregon.”

Meanwhile, Oregon’s governor made it clear that historically accepted behavior was no longer reasonable in today’s society.

“In Oregon, we strive to be a welcoming, inclusive state for all, regardless of race, religion, gender or background,” she said in a statement.

“Our state and nation have an ugly history of discrimination and bigotry. The singing at yesterday’s Oregon-BYU game was unacceptable. We have to do better.’

The Mormon school ran onto the field with Oregon’s Kingsley Suamataia carrying a flag for fallen former teammate Spencer Webb.

Brigham Young also placed flowers at the four-yard line as a token of respect for the close end, who tragically lost his life in July.

Webb died after falling and hitting his head on rockfalls at a popular swimming lake near Eugene, Oregon.

A sheriff’s spokesman said Webb climbed a rock before his fall.

‘[Webb] climbed a rock formation or wall and slipped,” said Sgt. Tom Speldrich. “He hit his head [and] fell into the water.’

Webb was unresponsive and could not be resuscitated by paramedics or bystanders, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

China with 14 flood deaths and 47 aftershocks

China today reported the deaths of at least 14 workers trapped in a flooded mine in Hebei province (north) and 47 aftershocks after a powerful earthquake in Taiwan (south), with no casualties.

Authorities said rescuers are still searching for a person who went missing during the first incident that was accurately recorded at an iron quarry in Qianxi County.

In addition, they launched an investigation to determine the causes of the tragedy and promised to punish those who spread false information about it.

Taiwan, meanwhile, experienced nearly 50 aftershocks – including a magnitude 5.3 tremor – after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck western Taitung County last night and was felt in three mainland China provinces.

The tremors did not cause any fatalities, but caused damage such as the collapse of ceilings and walls, power cuts and ruptures in the hydraulic system pipes.

Images published on social networks show supermarkets with shelves and products on the floor, as well as the collapse of infrastructure due to the effects of earthquakes.

Maid says how she is treated by Leonardo: “Mare’s Stomach”

One of the country’s most successful singers, Leonardo prides himself on a life of luxury and comfort. Currently, the Sertanejo lives in a mansion with Poliana Rocha, his wife, and has some staff to help him take care of the house. One of the employees who works at the artist’s home shared how he treated her, surprising the public.

It all started with Leonardo’s companion opening a question box on Instagram to interact with fans. In response to netizens’ curiosity, Poliana had the participation of Abadia Cardoso, her collaborator. One of the first questions the employee had to answer was whether the boss had already verbally abused her. The employee then clarified that Poliana doesn’t usually argue and even makes cute notes when she wants to ask for something.

Another follower asked if singer Leonardo often made fun of her as he was very playful. At that moment, Abadia revealed the relationship with the artist. “Leo makes fun of me too often. He calls me a mare’s belly, a gorge’s belly, says I eat all his moves, hides his mangoes and looks like there’s a mango tree here in the backyard,” the family maid explained humorously. The employee also stressed that the famous is very disorganized, unlike Poliana Rocha who likes to see everything in order.

Protecting heritage Legault promises 40 million more for church restoration

Protecting heritage: Legault promises $40 million more for church restoration

As more churches lose their callings, the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) pledges $40 million more for a total of $120 million over four years to restore these buildings that are part of the “history” of the province.

“Despite the decline in attendance at places of worship, these buildings retain their local and regional importance. Their architectural size and their location, often in the center of the oldest neighborhoods or village cores, make them powerful symbols of our built heritage,” said the party, which hopes to return to power on October 3.

That additional $10 million a year will be used to protect and enhance Quebec’s cultural heritage thanks to two programs designed to restore churches and requalify them for new uses according to the needs of the population, the leader announced of the CAQ, François Legault, accompanied by the candidates in Portneuf and Champlain, Vincent Caron and Sonia LeBel.

“Even though Quebec is secular, our churches are part of our history. It’s a precious legacy. It’s part of the beauty of Quebec. And we have a duty to protect that legacy,” Mr. Legault said as he drove through Greater Quebec City.

Dramatic victory for Max Homa in Napa

Dramatic victory for Max Homa in Napa

Max Homa successfully defended his Fortinet Championship crown on Sunday in Napa, California, thanks to a misstep by rival Danny Willett at the final pennant.

Leading by two points after 17 holes, Willett only needed to set a four-foot putt to capture his first PGA Tour title since 2016.

However, he proved Yogi Berra’s famous saying by missing his two chances to settle the case. The Englishman eventually bogeyed and had to settle for a card of 69 (-3), good for second place.

Homa (68) was amazed by the order and used Willett’s bad luck to win with a strike at -16. The American posted an excellent birdie from off the green in 18th place and missed just the second pennant to celebrate victory for the second time this year after crowning himself at the Wells Fargo Championship in May.

His compatriot Taylor Montgomery, who started the day in 37th place, impressed with a card of 64 (-8) and climbed the third step of the podium. Notably, he managed a 27-foot putt midway to pull a shot off par.

Canadian Nick Taylor made an excellent finish to move up from 17th to sixth place. He scored four birdies between the 14th and 18th pennants to deliver a 68(-4) card. Had it not been for his difficult second day (75), Taylor could have been in contention for the title, he finishing the contest at -11.

After three laps, leader among the representatives of the maple leaf, Adam Svensson (73), dropped back to 12th place. The British-Colombian could only score a birdie.

Mackenzie Hughes (72) and Taylor Pendrith (77) finished 25th and 67th, respectively.

A top 10 for Henderson

On the LPGA side, Canadian Brooke M. Henderson chose the best moment to present her best card at the Amazingcre Classic in Portland, Oregon.

The Ontarian shot 67 (-5) and moved up to tied 10th at -14. Henderson’s successes came primarily between the fifth and seventh holes, where she chained two birdies and an eagle. She played par or better on each of the 18 holes at Columbia Edgewater Country Club.

Despite a difficult start to the day, USA’s Andrea Lee (66) took the highest award with -19. After committing two bogeys in the first three holes, she recovered well and saved five shots on the back nine.

The only other Canadian in the race, Alena Sharp (74), stumbled on lap four and finished in 52nd place.
