Palestine is not alone, Nicaragua affirmed at the United Nations

Speaking at the tenth special session of the UN General Assembly on the crisis in the Middle East, the diplomat considered it necessary to intensify international efforts in the search for a final and peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In this sense, he emphasized the emergence of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and the borders recognized in 1967 as the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace in the region.

Criticizing decades of inaction and indifference by the multilateral organization’s Security Council, he said it was reprehensible that that body had not adopted a simple humanitarian resolution urgently calling for a ceasefire and access to and delivery of humanitarian assistance.

“The Security Council must fully assume its responsibilities entrusted in the letter and do so urgently and without double standards,” he said.

He strongly condemned the severity of the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, which he described as terrible because it “causes ever-increasing casualties and pain among so many innocent families.”

He condemned the inhumane situation faced by the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip for more than 16 years, as well as Israel’s occupation and illegal blockade, which turned the coastal enclave into a vast open-air prison and impoverished the population of more than 2.3 million people.

“Nicaragua believes that peace and stability in the Middle East is possible only through the negotiation and full implementation of General Assembly and Security Council resolutions regarding Palestine and will support all efforts leading to a ceasefire. “, he emphasized.

Hermida stressed that the General Assembly has an imperative responsibility to demand immediate compliance with the ceasefire and the protection of the people of Palestine without double standards and on equal terms with the people.

He condemned the Israeli army’s violent crackdown on civilians in the Gaza Strip, where more than eight thousand people, most of them children, have died since October 7 last year.

It is time for us at the United Nations to listen to the cry of the people of the world to end the historic injustice inflicted on Palestine. Peace must prevail at all costs and, above all, give way to the only fair and just place. He stressed that a true solution is for the two states to live in peace and security.
