Panama will host a high-level dialogue to comprehensively monitor the challenges posed by irregular migration across our continent, coinciding with a specific crisis in countries of origin and affecting countries of transit and destination.

The high-level ministerial meeting, convened by Panama in cooperation with the United States, will take place on April 19 and 20 at the Bolívar Palace, home of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and at a hotel in the Panamanian capital.

At least 20 countries have already pledged their attendance and expanded attendance at the first meeting Panama hosted virtually in August 2021, during the height of the irregular migration movement across our borders, where representatives from ten governments of the continent attended to speak for the first time together and with a holistic approach to solutions.

US support for this initiative comes in the presence of Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Minister of Border Security Alejandro Mayorkas, and the agenda includes key Panamanian proposals such as defending institutions and governance to prevent emigration and fighting corruption destabilizing element of democracies.

“For more than a year, we have been working with the United States and other key American partners to find common ground and areas of articulation to address this phenomenon and avoid an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the region.” This is a problem we cannot solve alone. We have the opportunity to set up new effective cooperation mechanisms for specific issues, and we start the comprehensive and holistic management of irregular migration,” said Panamanian Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes.
