Panamanian Indigenous People at COP27 for better stewardship of natural resources

A statement sent to Prensa Latina by the National Coordinator of Indigenous Peoples of Panama (Coonapip) said the five delegates will join representatives of the Ministry of the Environment (Miambiente), among other institutions.

In his message, Coonapip emphasizes that indigenous peoples are Mother Nature’s greatest custodians, hence the concern for the use and management of their land, flora and fauna.

At the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) in the city of Sharm El Sheikh, the traditional authorities will exchange views with their counterparts from other nations on behalf of all regions of the Isthmus on the 2030 Agenda, which focus on their own Focused on reality and worldview, they specified.

Coonapip will participate in tables and workshops on natural resources (forests and Mother Earth), governance and economics (good living, food production and security, tourism).

She will also be present in the debates on other cardinal issues such as education, health, housing, institutional strengthening and traditional organizations (sustainability and gender component).

The impacts of climate change, according to this group, are a reality for the indigenous peoples of the Isthmus, particularly on the Atlantic coast and surrounding areas, and directly affect the areas in the Guna Yala, Ngabe Buglé and Emberá Wounaan areas.

In this sense, they will promote global alliances, technical and financial support in favor of the organization, focused on solutions based on territorial security, forest and biodiversity protection, gender justice, youth and sustainable development.

At COP27, Panama will insist on greater commitment from all countries to mitigate the impact of climate change and vigorously reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The director of climate change in Miambiente, Dr. Ligia Castro, told this outlet that this year’s representation is made up mostly of young people, mostly women.

We will be present in the various exchange and negotiation scenarios, but the key will be to convey the need for rich countries in particular, but also developing countries, to work together as a team to adapt and face extreme events that damage and millions caused by people. dollar losses. , in addition to intensifying and increasing its frequency every year.

With regard to COP27, as an introductory letter, Panama has its status as a carbon negative country, Castro said, to which various strategies are added, such as preparations for updating the contribution determined at the national level.

According to its organizers, COP27 will focus on a range of climate-related issues, mainly reducing emissions, adapting to the negative effects of the scourge and financing.
