Panamanian workers call for an end to US interference

Panama City, January 22 (Prensa Latina) The National Central Office of Panamanian Workers (CNTP) today called for an immediate end to United States interference in the internal affairs of the Isthmus nation.

In a statement, the union organization denounced that the stance of current US Ambassador Mari Carmen Aponte, who roams the country providing information on matters affecting only Panamanians, violates international standards.

He also questioned the government authorities for allowing the diplomat’s insolence.

In its message, the CNTP indicated that Aponte’s presence was uncomfortable for the workers’ group, reminding him that “Panama is a sovereign and independent country and we know that we are not an associated state, nor a protectorate, nor a colony are a neo-colony and many fewer want to add another star to the flag of the United States of America,” the text reads.

He also pointed out that workers want respectful relations with the United States, but also recognition as a free and independent country where several generations have fought for a single flag and territory, achievements they have won over time must be maintained at all costs.

Other organizations such as the National Front for the Defense of Economic and Social Rights also criticized the actions of Aponte, who demanded that the National Assembly (parliament) approve a property forfeiture law to fight drug trafficking and corruption, but with interests of its own.

In recent weeks, the diplomat has been seen visiting areas and reception points for irregular migrants in the Darién jungle, where military bases still exist, according to communities.

The organizations have also rejected military exercises such as the so-called Mercury IV under the umbrella of humanitarian aid, which began the day before, and the relocation of modular classrooms to indigenous communities that are difficult to access, such as the Ngäbe-Buglé.
