In the next chapters of the novel “Pantanal‘, José Leôncio (Marcos Palmeira) will make a decision that will completely change Zaquieu’s (Silvero Pereira) life.

It all starts when the boy asks to be part of a farming entourage in the role of cook. The boss will initially not grant permission for fear of not being able to withstand the intensity of the days on the road.

However, Zaquieu won’t change his mind. Then, one night, the farmer calls you into his office for a chat:

As a cook for an entourage, Zaquieu, you have to be very competent. IT IS. You need to know how to drive like humans and know all the ways! Sometimes, alone and with the donkeys and bruacas that are carried along these paths, he must precede the troops so that when the peonada arrives at the inn, the food is already ready and waiting for them.

Zaquieu will reply that he is clear about everything. The farmer will further list the difficulties:

Do you think you would have the courage to cross a river on horseback?

I think so. But I can only say that after trying the boy will say.

José Leôncio ends the call and sends him back to the kitchen. Zaquieu will set off with his head bowed, but at that moment the peasant will order him to return with Tiberius (Guito) to settle the details of the journey. The boy will react euphorically:

You will not regret it, Mr. Rei do Gado! You will never regret it!

If you come back to me alive, Zaquieu, that’s enough for me!

I will come back. You’ll see! Livelier than ever!
