The Panthers are building a new team headquarters right across the border from Charlotte in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

But now his status has changed.

According to Jonathan Alexander of the Charlotte Observer, construction on the project was put on hold because the city of Rock Hill was unable to make its initial payment as early as March 2021.

“We are committed to improving the Carolina community that supports our team and players,” Tepper Sports & Entertainment said in a statement. “To this end, despite the fact that GT Real Estate Holdings, LLC has invested more than $170 million in the development of Rock Hill, our partners have been unable to make the agreed investments to fund the construction of public infrastructure.

“Given the economic realities, the difficult but prudent decision was made to put the project on hold. Ongoing work will continue with our partners to find a cost-effective solution for all parties to continue this project at Rock Hill.”

The first phase of the project was scheduled to be completed in 2023 after pandemic-related delays pushed its original opening date to August 2022.

Alexander reports that Rock Hill City Manager David Vehon said he was unaware the team was putting the facility on hold.

The Panthers currently operate at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
