I like working on radio because it’s all about words, being able to use them. But then there’s the adrenaline of live broadcasting: I’m always afraid of saying the wrong thing, not being able to stop those who talk too much, and not breaking the silence of those who speak monosyllabically. I’ve learned that the more important the guests are, the less you have to fear: They just give in, they don’t have to prove anything anymore. Thousands of people have texted me on social media, from “I saw you on TV, you kept me company during lockdown” to “You are the perfect wife for my son”. Italy was stuck indoors for months, with many people cooking or working out while watching us competitors do the same.
The first “bad moment” of his career came immediately afterwards:
After the win. It was a time to advance my career and offer you any job and instead everything was blocked because of the pandemic. I was locked up at home in Vicenza, the phone didn’t ring. I was discouraged. And I saw my country weakened by Covid, which is why I donated the seal of approval to civil defense. In this moment of national mourning, I would have felt out of place to keep that money. I got out of this time of crisis and convinced myself that it’s good to stop working now. After winning this show, it’s easy to get upset, to lose touch with reality when going from a party to an inauguration to a guest on TV. I wouldn’t have taken that risk, I would have had to start over. But it was luck. Radio Zeta’s proposal has arrived. I left as a guest. And then they asked me to work with them. That’s how I discovered the best job in the world.
