Benin’s honorary consul in Montreal is calling on authorities to shed light on the death of one of his compatriots left on a sidewalk in Ahunstic in late September.

Luc Isidore Takpa confirmed that the woman at the center of this affair, La Presse revealed on Tuesday, is a Beninese national who came to Canada five or six years ago. She is the mother of two children.
“I’m shocked, that’s for sure. I am surprised and shocked. To be honest, these are my first feelings as a human being,” Mr. Takpa said in a telephone interview. The Honorary Consul called on the Office of Independent Investigations (BEI) to continue investigating this situation “to the end.”

The woman at the center of this affair, whom La Presse is not naming, was arrested on September 26 at around 3:30 p.m. in front of a primary school in Ahuntsic. Contrary to a court order, she tried to contact one of his children.
After being restrained and handcuffed by police, the woman complained that she could no longer feel her limbs or move. An hour later, she was still dropped off on the sidewalk in front of her HLM in the same neighborhood.
She remained there for more than an hour before an ambulance arrived to help. Urgences-Santé explained that the call was not sufficiently prioritized due to incomplete information provided by citizens who reported the emergency call to 911.
La Presse announced on Wednesday that the three police officers involved in abandoning the woman on a sidewalk were arrested by the BEI during investigations on charges of grievous bodily harm and failure to render aid to a person in danger. This is a very rare procedure.
