Patriots get new target for quarterback Mac Jones

An intradivision trade brings wide receiver DeVante Parker from the Miami Dolphins to the New England Patriots in the AFC East.

The Patriots are sending the Dolphins a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft for Parker and a fifth-round pick in the 2022 draft, NFL Network and ESPN reported Saturday.

While the teams have yet to announce the trade, New England quarterback Mac Jones has already weighed the deal via his Twitter account. “Let’s go!! Welcome to NEP! @DeVanteParker11”, Jones tweeted.

replied Parker to Jones’ tweet with “Let’s get it big dawg”.

The 14th player selected in the 2015 NFL Draft, Parker had his best season of 2019 when he caught 72 passes for 1,202 yards and nine touchdowns. Last season, Parker missed seven games and finished with 40 receptions for 515 yards and two touchdowns.

Parker became expendable to the Dolphins when they acquired Pro Bowl wide receiver Tyreek Hill, a former West Alabama standout, in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs and signed former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr. in a free agency to join wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, Miami’s first-round pick from Alabama last year.

Parker is joining a New England wide-receiver corps that could return intact for Jones, the former Alabama All-American who was a quarterback on the all-rookie team last season when he rushed for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns.

TIED TOGETHER: WHO WILL TRAIN MAC JONES IN 2022?

Of the five wide receivers who caught more than two passes for New England in 2021, four are on the 2022 list.

The exception is top receiver Jakobi Meyers, who will almost certainly be back for the Patriots. Meyers, a restricted free agent, caught 83 passes for 866 yards and two touchdowns in 2021, prompting New England to offer him a second-round bid this offseason. Another team could still draft Meyers out of the Patriots, but in that case would have to send a second-round draft pick to New England.

Wide receivers on the Patriots’ roster include Kendrick Bourne, who had 55 receptions for 800 yards and five touchdowns in 2021; Nelson Agholor, who had 37 receptions for 473 yards and three touchdowns; K’Neal Harry, who had 12 receptions for 184 yards; and Kristian Wilkerson, who had four receptions for 42 yards and two touchdowns.

Trade will leave Miami with four selections in the 2022 draft, the fewest in the NFL. But the Dolphins have two first-round decisions and two third-round decisions to inform their second-round pick in the 2023 draft.
