Daniel Auster was arrested by New York City Police Department on Friday on suspicion of the negligence that led to the death of his 10-month-old child, who was found unconscious at their Brooklyn home on November 1.
That’s the great lesson of Lou Reed’s most haunting songs for the Velvet Underground, like the first films by Scorsese, Spike Lee or Jarmusch: in New York, everything always comes back to the streets. And so it is on the surface of sidewalks, strewn with everything, nothing and, above all, life in ruins, that the sometimes tragic or sordid truths behind the facades’ mystery are read most clearly. Last fall, some residents of Bergen Street in Park Slope, a Brooklyn neighborhood with a very gentrified charm, were surprised and then concerned when they saw a jumble of books, toys and baby clothes appear on the pavement in front of the tiny house that they had used to see their neighbors Daniel Auster and his companion come out and push their newborn daughter’s stroller. That was before it was announced that 10-month-old Ruby had died on November 1st. His father – himself the son of writers Paul Auster and Lydia Davis – was arrested on Friday on charges of manslaughter and manslaughter resulting in death.

At the time of the drama, Daniel Auster had testified that his companion, who had gone to work, had nodded off while his daughter napped on his chest. When he woke up to find her lifeless, he had called the emergency services and tried in vain to revive her before the police arrived.
