247 Economist Paul Krugman, winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Economics, criticized the Republican offensive against Disneyland in an article in the New York Times.

Florida Gov. Republican Ron DeSantis, the party’s main name in the 2024 election, signed legislation on the 22nd ending Disneyland’s tax exemption. The company employs dozens of lobbyists to maintain its status and works with both Republicans and Democrats.

The controversy arises over the timing of the decision, which comes after the passage of the Don’t Say Gay law, which has been criticized by the LGBTQIA+ community, the White House and Disney.

In the article, Krugman noted that DeSantis’ decision will have a negative impact on the state’s economy. In particular, the Republican attacks on the company “reflect a sudden turn to bigotry in a nation that seemed to be growing increasingly tolerant; and the allegations against Disney are, in a word, insane.”

“Disney had no say in this legislation when it was enforced. But an entertainment company whose business depends in part on its public image cannot deviate too far from prevailing social mores. And American society has become much more open to LGBTQ issues than it used to be: approval of samesex marriage has jumped from 27% in 1996 to 70% last year,” Krugman wrote.

“Not long ago it would have been considered unacceptable to use state power to levy financial penalties on companies for expressing political views you dislike. In fact, it might even be unconstitutional. But the attack on Disney went well beyond financial reprisals. : Suddenly Mickey Mouse is part of a huge conspiracy. Florida’s lieutenant governor reached out to Newsmax to accuse Disney of “indoctrinating” and “sexualizing” children with its “nonsecret agenda,” he wrote.

“If that sounds crazy which it is it’s also increasingly the Republican norm. I don’t think political coverage has caught up with how fully QAnonized the GOP has become,” he wrote.
