At the Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasília, the karaoke atmosphere opened with a parade of hits from Paul McCartney’s shows with “Can’t Buy Me Love”. The rock star is back in Brazil for his ninth tour of the country, with a performance that began just before 9 p.m. and lasted about three hours this Thursday (30).
The musician was accompanied by shouts and applause from an enthusiastic audience that commented on his arrival in the capital since Tuesday (28), when he performed a surprise show for some fans.
At 81, the former Beatle remembers the quartet with songs like “Blackbird” and “Get Back” and with homages to his former companions. He also maintains his friendly moments speaking to the audience in Portuguese, which he already knows from his tours here.
“In Spite of All the Danger”, the first recording of the later Beatles group, opened a retro sequence, followed by “Love Me Do”, the song that founded the Liverpool band.
John Lennon is celebrated with “I’ve Got a Feeling”, in a kind of virtual duet with the musician’s voice, and also with “Here Today”, a song from Paul’s solo career as a tribute to the former Beatle. “Something” remembers George Harrison, who died in 2001.
The “Got Back” tour includes around 40 songs from his career. Most of them came from the Beatles, but also from his solo career and others from Wings, a band he founded in the 1970s right at the beginning of the performance the audience listened eagerly to “Letting Go”.
The exBeatles has not been in the country since his performance in 2019 on “The Freshen Up Tour” and made a shocking arrival in Brasília with the surprise show at Clube do Choro.
In the Oscar Niemeyerdesigned concert hall, only 500 people saw the just over hourlong performance, which gave a foretaste of what the show would be like two days later at the Mané Garrincha.
The sealed cellphones at this premiere so that there were no records of the audience added even more exclusivity to the historic show in the capital on Tuesday.
Paul will perform a total of eight shows in Brazil in addition to Brasília, he will perform in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba and Belo Horizonte. The final game will be on December 16 at the Maracana, where he played in a historic show in 1990 in front of more than 180,000 fans.
