The actress recently caused a stir when she shared a video on Instagram of herself making her mother Joyce Patton’s “famous” fried chicken recipe.
In it, Patton says she’s frying 138 chicken wings for her son Julian’s school. (Patton shares Julian with her ex-husband singer Robin Thicke.)
She is then seen rinsing the chicken, dipping it in flour, placing it in avocado oil to fry, and then adding Lawry’s seasoned salt, paprika, and pepper to the chicken while it cooks.
The internet was screaming foul (or fowl, if you will).
Comments ranged from believing Patton hadn’t washed the chicken thoroughly enough to appearing that she seasoned her cooking oil rather than the actual court fowl.
Patton posted a video response Tuesday from Mexico, where she was vacationing with her son.
“I just wanted to reply and say listen, I understand,” she said in the video, titled “Peace, Love, and Fried Chicken.” “It might look crazy. That’s how we do it. My mother taught me.”
The ‘Mission Impossible’ actress denied she didn’t wash the chicken well enough, saying it may have appeared to be because of the editing of the video but that she absolutely did as she fed it to her son and his schoolmates.
Regarding how she seasoned her chicken, Patton said she has a new recipe and is open to suggestions, but vowed to “always cook my mom’s chicken the way she used to.”
“We put the spices in the oil and all that,” she said. “That’s how we do it.”
