(Quebec) Liberals accuse Quebec of funding a “transphobic” group. According to Jennifer Maccarone, the positions taken by the organization Pour les droits des femmes du Québec (PDF Québec) regarding gender identity are at odds with government measures to combat homophobia and transphobia.

In a question posted in the Blue Room on Thursday, the Westmount-Saint-Louis member read excerpts from documents posted on Quebec’s PDF website linking sex reassignment surgeries to a form of mutilation. It also says that “the number of young girls being referred to gender identity clinics, which is mushrooming, should be a warning that something resembling an epidemic is happening.”
Earlier this week, CBC News also issued a report alleging that PDF Quebec has a history of attacking trans activists on Twitter and sharing posts urging trans people to go through a detransition process.
Asked in Parliament about the fact that Quebec is funding this group, whose grant for 2022-2023 totaled $143,000, Minister for the Status of Women Martine Biron replied that “each group has an opinion” and that the groups “respect must be heard as a whole”. She then listed the measures her government has taken to promote the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
PDF Quebec has received financial support from the Quebec government since 2019. He also occasionally defends his positions on the debate pages of the news media. At the time of publication, PDF Quebec had not responded to the PLQ’s criticism.
