Peace and Security Efforts Related to Education in Africa

Addis Ababa, February 18 (Prensa Latina) Peace, security, governance and sustainable development efforts related to education were addressed today by the African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye.

Responding in a press conference, Adeoye said what the essence of peace would be without food security and good education, disclosing that two days ago they collaborated with the World Bank to organize a meeting on the right to education for stakeholders.

“It is a fundamental human right that we must promote not only because of the issue of 2024, but because the right to education, quality, inclusive and lasting education for all benefits peace,” he assured.

He said that it also has something to do with peace, because the latter is about tolerance, promoting dialogue and reconciliation.

Therefore, he continued, these factors will certainly help in 2024 and beyond. Our department, together with the African Union, works with the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation to ensure that those who go through the learning systems are also good citizens at national, regional, continental and global levels.

He highlighted the promotion of two fundamental rights this year, “the right to education and the right to development, because we must distinguish, although they are linked, that on our continent there is a greater awareness of political and civil rights, the right “Freedom of expression, right of assembly, right to vote.”

But what about the right to development and to education? “Therefore, this year we will strengthen our commitment as a ministry to promote the right to education that is lifelong, inclusive and of high quality in scope and implementation,” he concluded.
