A second initiative will be announced later in the year, this time to secure the perimeters of places frequented by seniors.

The City of Montreal states that 42 projects in 13 districts were selected. The Safety Around Schools Program (PSAÉ) will ensure more than 15,000 students stay safer around their schools, according to Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante.

In Tuesday’s announcement, Mayor Plante points out that the city has doubled its travel insurance budget.

PSAÉ interventions include sidewalk overhangs, speed bumps, elevated intersections, center block and other elevated crosswalks, pedestrian shelters, intersection realignments, signage changes, and the addition of speed displays and traffic lights.

The city’s announcement comes about a month after a seven-year-old girl was fatally hit by a vehicle on Parthenais Street in the Sainte-Marie neighborhood. The driver of the vehicle did not stop; A few hours later he reported himself to the police and was provisionally released pending further criminal proceedings against him.
