remember the career
Pedro Paulo Rangel was born in June 1948 in Rio de Janeiro (RJ).
The son of two civil servants, he discovered his taste for theater at the age of 11 through a neighbor who was an amateur actor.
As a child, he joined the cast of the children’s play “O Bruxo ea Rainha”, where he met the actor Marco Nanini. Later, the two studied together at the Conservatório Nacional de Teatro, today’s UNIRIO theater school.
He had his first theatrical experience in the play “Roda Viva” by Chico Buarque, directed by Zé Celso, with whom he also collaborated in the play “Galileo Galilei”. At that time he also acted in a montage of “Romeo and Juliet” directed by Jô Soares.
In 1969 he made his television debut on TV Tupi in the soap opera Super Plá. The following year he filmed the soap opera Toninho On The Rocks on the same channel.
In 1972 he made his TV Globo debut in the soap opera Bicho do Mato. Three years later he wrote dramaturgy history by playing the first male act on Brazilian television in the role of Juca Viana in Gabriela.
In 1975 he won his first leading role in the soap opera “O Noviço”, which only had 20 episodes.
At that time he also acted in “A Patota” with his girlfriend Nanini, “Saramandaia” and “O Pulo do Gato” on Globo. In 1979 he had a new and brief stint at Tupi, working on “Dinheiro Vivo”, a soap opera written by Mário Prata.
Pedro Paulo returned to TV Globo in 1981 and spent years starring in the humorous Viva o Gordo and TV Pirata.
In 1988, he made a definitive return to soap operas with Vale Tudo. In the following years he played important characters in series, such as the homosexual Adamastor in “Pedra Sobre Pedra” (1992), Calixto in “O Cravo ea Rosa” (2000) and Argemiro Falcão, brother of the villain Bia Falcão, in Belíssima (2005 ).
Among other outstanding works are the soap operas Torre de Babel (1998), Desejo Proibido (2007), Amor Eterno Amor (2012) and the miniseries A Muralha (2000), O Quinto dos Infernos ( 2000) and O Dentista Mascarado (2013), his last appearance with Globo.
In addition to his work for television, Pedro Paulo also devoted himself to theater and cinema, which has received numerous awards.
The actor battled the smokingrelated effects of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) for 20 years. This didn’t stop him from pursuing acting, although he left the soap operas in 2012.
“That doesn’t stop me from working at all. I take medication, I have a routine. I do physical therapy,” he said.
His last role was that of Empress Leopoldina’s librarian in the series “Independencias” (2022) on TV Cultura.
