Peeps are the most popular Easter candy

While Peeps has received mixed reviews from the Axios Visuals team – and there are strong preferences as to whether they’re fresh, aged, or better in the microwave – there’s no denying that the marshmallow treats bring us all joy.

The big picture: Part of that joy was fueled by the realization that it would take 127 quadrillion peeps to fill the Grand Canyon, raising the question of what if we measured the world in peeps?

Millions of Americans celebrate Easter this Sunday.

Easter baskets and egg hunts are a tradition for many, contributing to an expected $2.98 billion in candy sales.

Using the numbers: Easter is one of the biggest holidays for candy makers, right after the winter holidays and Halloween. According to the National Retail Federation’s annual spending survey, 90% of consumers plan to buy candy to celebrate. That’s more than any other category, including groceries.

What is the most popular Easter candy?

While everyone has their personal favorites, an analysis of Amazon’s US marketplace from March 28th to April 3rd, 2022 by Pattern reveals the top 3:

  • Peeps: 22% of sales
  • Gummy bears: 21%
  • Cadbury eggs: 14%
  • These best sellers may surprise the chocolate lovers among us, but the popularity of Peeps comes as no surprise to their creators at Just Born Quality Confections. According to a recent press release, 81% of Americans say marshmallow treats remind them of Easter, and 57% associate them with the beginning of spring.
