WASHINGTON (Portal) The US Department of Defense's Office of Inspector General said on Thursday (11) that it would begin a review this month of the way the internment of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was handled.

It will be the first independent, nonpartisan investigation into the case of Austin, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer and hospitalized. Both the Pentagon and Republican lawmakers have announced their own analyses.

Austin, 70, has been at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center since Jan. 1, but the information was largely kept secret from the public, the White House and Congress by the Pentagon over the last week, sparking a strong political backlash World.

President Joe Biden's administration is struggling to calm the political uproar over revelations that the reelection running president only learned on Jan. 4 of his defense secretary's Jan. 1 hospitalization.

CONTINUED AFTER RECOMMENDATIONS

Austin is just below Biden at the top of the US military chain of command. His duties require him to be on standby to respond to any national security crisis.

This includes always being ready to establish secure communications with other authorities in the event of a nuclear attack, which can be difficult in an intensive care unit.
