New York Yankees pitcher Domingo German played the perfect game in an 11-0 win over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night.
It’s the first time a pitcher has done so in Major League Baseball since 2012, when Seattle Mariners gunner Felix Hernandez muzzled the Chicago White Sox. German is the fourth Yankees pitcher to hit a perfect game; David Cone was able to fend off the Montreal Expos on July 18, 1999. This is the 24th time such a feat has been accomplished in Major League Baseball history.
German had nine strikeouts and fired 99 shots to wipe out the offense of Major League Baseball’s worst team. Also, he didn’t have too much trouble confirming his performance at the bottom of the ninth inning, where it took him six shots to make three.
“Considering how many gunners have done that, it’s exciting to be part of the story now,” the hero of the night commented to the media through an interpreter.
For his uncle and his teammates
This perfect piece will be like a little balm on a gash for him because a few days ago he lost an important member of his family due to the death of his uncle. “It really wasn’t an easy week. However, I am here with my team and doing my job. All the support from the guys made it possible for me to accomplish this. They gave me the strength I needed and the help I needed to stay here. I had to find a way to stay positive,” he explained.
“I’m so proud of him,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told the New York Post. He’s been through so much, it wasn’t easy. It was pleasant to see him arrive at the hill and prepare this masterpiece.
But on his previous two starts, German gave up 15 earned runs in five and a third inning. He improved his season record to 5-5 while his ERA is 4.54. After some tough campaigns, he’s trying to get back to where he was in 2018 when he won 18 of his 22 decisions.
