Lima, February 25 (RHC) – Peruvian President Dina Boluarte reported this Saturday that she is awaiting a response to her request to testify remotely before prosecutors who have subpoenaed her, citing risks to her safety .
The President denied a newspaper’s version that she had twice asked to postpone the hearing that was part of the investigation into her and Prime Minister Alberto Otárola’s allegations of genocide and other crimes during the social protests, demanding his resignation.
A statement from the presidency revealed that Boluarte did not ask for his statements to be postponed but, after two calls – for January 30 and February 23 – asked to explain virtually via conference call without the prosecutor’s office answered.
He assures that on both occasions he “cited the security risks and social unrest that his support of prosecutors could generate”, but the request received no response.
“Therefore, the President of the Republic does not shy away from or delay explanations. Likewise, it reaffirms its commitment to facilitate and participate in any proceedings that prosecutors deem appropriate,” the statement added.
Both the president and prime minister will be ousted on a complaint alleging crimes of genocide, aggravated homicide and assault related to the 7th who replaced Boluarte in her capacity as vice president.
In the same investigation, Attorney General Daniel Soria asked the judiciary to overturn Prime Minister Otárola’s February 16 expanded statement, arguing that he had not been summoned to represent him, in violation of due process and the right of defence
Attorney Romy Chang, however, asserted that the lawsuit will not be pursued because the presence of the prosecutor only corresponds to the questioning of the officer being questioned as a witness and not, as in this case in which Otárola is under investigation, only the presence of the prosecutor admissible and the defendant’s attorney.
