The proposal is amid the manifestations in several cities of the country after the attempted coup in the country. “Interpreting the will of the citizenry (…) I have decided to take the initiative to reach an agreement with the Congress of the Republic to bring forward the general elections for the month of April 2024,” Boluarte said in a message to the nation on television in the first few minutes of Monday 12th. The proposal would see his mandate shortened by two years and is intended to assuage popular outrage, which is calling for new presidential and general elections to be called. Boluarte, who took office last Wednesday, declared a state of emergency in areas of the country where violent protests have been recorded. “With the same patriotic sense, I announce the declaration of states of emergency in areas of high social conflict to peacefully regain control of internal order,” said Boluarte, who also lamented the deaths of two protesters Andahuaylas🇧🇷
