After six dates for the playoffs, the playoffs begin World Cup 2026in which the Peruvian team left more doubts than certainties, Juan Reynoso’s hours as Blanquirroja coach would be numbered.
The national team’s bitter 1-1 draw with Vinotinto, with goals from Yotún and Savarino, was the turning point that left Cabezón unrecognized.
After said meeting, Juan Carlos Oblitas recommended to the board of the Peruvian Football Federation the departure of the former Cruz Azul coach, a proposal accepted by the organization that governs national football.
The FPF’s legal arm has been working on the separation of Reynoso; However, the negotiations will not be easy. Although the association has made its decision, Cabezón refuses to give up technical management.
“We demand the continuity of the sports project Juan Reynoso. When the contract was signed, it was clear to everyone that this was not about results, but about a long process. This situation was discussed beforehand, otherwise Juan would not have arranged it. It is not silver. We want the extensive work of the coaching staff to be fulfilled. From the FPF they have already told me that they want Juan’s resignation and that it will not happen,” explained Mathias Fariña, representative of Reynoso.
Since taking office on the bench of the Peru national team in August 2022, the 53-year-old coach has led 14 games with the Blanquirroja, of which he recorded 4 wins, 3 draws and 7 defeats. In the South American qualification, Everyone’s Team only got 2 out of 18 possible points, which puts them at the bottom of the table and is also the only team that couldn’t get three points in the qualification Conmebol.
The FPF wants a coach who can turn around the difficult moment that the Blanquirroja is going through. The coach selected to lead the national team will have the opportunity to put together a sufficiently competitive squad in the first half of 2024.
The national team will play a number of friendly matches against European rivals in March on the FIFA date. Later, in June, there will be the Copa América, a tournament that Peru has used in the past to renew its squad, as Ricardo Gareca did in 2016.
The qualifiers will continue in September next year, the month in which the team will face Colombia and Ecuador.
