Many pet owners — especially those who can run away — have considered tagging their pets with a tracking chip like the one offered by Apple (AirTag), Tile Mate or Samsung (Galaxy SmartTag+).
The Amazon company Ring is taking a completely different approach for its new product Pet Tag. Much simpler: The Ring Pet Tag is essentially based on a QR code instead of Bluetooth or GPS functionality.
The Ring Pet Tag essentially consists of attaching a QR code to your dog or cat’s collar that is linked to an application. Should the unthinkable happen, someone can scan the QR code with their smartphone and help reunite the lost pet with its owner.

Recently launched, Ring is offering its Pet Tag for pre-order for $9.99 in the American market to make it easier to return lost pets home. It wouldn’t be surprising to find the same pet brands at the Canadian megastore later.
What does the QR code contain?
The QR code is linked to the pet’s profile, which can contain information such as its health status and, most importantly, an optional “Contact” function that allows two-way communication with the pet owner. While you could easily put a regular collar on your pet with your phone number on it, this QR code protects your number, zip code or other personal information that is often attached to pet collars.

All animal information
When a QR code is scanned, the owner receives a notification and the pet’s profile is displayed to the person who found it. The pet’s profile can contain up to five photos, its name, breed, weight and color. It may also contain unique markings, health information, medications and microchip numbers. Ring has also partnered with the Petco Love Lost organization to integrate a network of more than 2,500 animal shelters across the United States into the Ring app.
Also a four-legged display
However, the Ring Pet Tag does not have tracking or wireless capabilities. It’s literally a QR code, so there’s no GPS or Amazon Sidewalk integration and it has nothing to do with using an Apple AirTag on your pet. It also features a giant ring logo with the slogan “Always at Home,” turning your pet into a walking ring advertisement.
