Philadelphia Phillies’ Alec Bohm gets standing ovation night after 3 errors, choice words

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — One night after saying, “I hate this place,” Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm received a standing ovation from the Philadelphia crowd.

The video shown above is from our original report.

Bohm, who made three errors in Monday’s 5-4 win over the New York Mets and later apologized for venting his frustration, came on as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s second game of the series . He received an ovation before stepping out.

“It was cool, it was really cool,” Bohm said after Tuesday’s 2-0 loss, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. “I really appreciated it. At the end of the day, when you have siblings, fight with your sibling for a second and then you’re best friends again.

“All they want is transparency. We all want the same thing.

Phillies manager Joe Girardi said he thinks Bohm handled the apology well.

“It’s such a tough night to have on the field and the emotions got the better of him,” Girardi said. “What I’m proud of is that he stood by it, he reacted well in the game, he helped us win a game [Monday] and he learned from it. You have to do that.”

Girardi added: “Philadelphia is a great place to play. You want to make an effort. They expect you to be honest and take responsibility. He has done all of these things. He had a great ovation kid because I’m sure last night was a tough night for him. The fans have responded to him in a great way and probably mean a lot to him.”

Outfielder Nick Castellanos also had kind words about Phillies fans.

“Everything I was led to believe about Philadelphia was the exact opposite. It was incredible,” said Castellanos before tipping his cap. “Kudos to the city of Philadelphia for having their players’ backs like this. It’s unbelievable.”

Bohm made three mistakes at third base in the first three innings Monday, and cameras caught him making some choice words after his second mistake.

However, a rally he ignited with a lead-off walk – and admitted his mistake – may have eased hard feelings.

Bohm said “the feelings got the better of me” and that meant no offense to the franchise or Philadelphia.

“I said it. Am I serious? No,” Bohm said. “It’s obviously a frustrating night for me. I made a few mistakes on the field. Look, these people, these fans, they just want to win. You heard it, we’re coming back, they’re great. I’m only sorry to them. I do not mean that.”
