(CNN) – Tina Turner passed away on May 24th at the age of 83, leaving behind an incredible musical legacy in rock and soul. But she was also known for her keen fashion sense: mini dresses with sequins or fringes that showed off her famously long legs; effortlessly cool button-down shirts and slouchy jeans; and flashy pant suits, often accompanied by his trademark spiky strands.
One of Turner’s most-repeated looks was the one that marked her comeback in the mid-1980s: the denim jacket, leather miniskirt, and black stiletto heels she wore when she appeared on the music video for New York City strutted”. Other moments of sovereign style also remain in the collective memory, from the shimmering red sleeveless dress she wore to the 1985 Grammys to the black leather jumpsuit she sang in at the 2000 Super Bowl.
Over the years, Turner has been the darling of designers such as Giorgio Armani and Azzedine Alaïa, with the latter frequently dressing her for album covers, music videos and red carpets.
She also worked with famed hairstylist Bob Mackie for her theatrical wardrobe early in her career, reuniting with him decades later for his 2008 career 50th anniversary tour.
“It’s not often that you find a Tina Turner who knows exactly how she wants to look and how she wants to move,” Mackie told fashion site The Cut in 2021. “Sometimes you have to inspire them to do it, but I’ve never had to inspire them.” Tina Turner. She was already equipped.
