Photos of the damaged wreckage of the world’s largest plane after it was burned during a Russian attack on a Ukrainian airport have surfaced.

The images show the destroyed Ukrainian-made Antonov-225 Mriya, which means a dream, at Hostomel Airport near Kyiv after he was shot on Sunday.

The repair of the six-engine, 314-tonne cargo plane could cost more than $ 3 billion (£ 2.24 billion), a sum that Ukrainian state arms maker Ukroboronprom said it would try to get Russia to step forward.

“The Russian occupiers destroyed the flagship of Ukrainian aviation – the legendary An-225 Mriya. This happened at Antonov Airport in Hostomel near Kyiv, “Ukroboronprom reported. Facebook page.

After the attack on the plane, images and footage appeared showing the severely burned plane, with black smoke rising from the wreckage.

The “legendary” plane was originally designed by the Soviet Union when it controlled Ukraine as a socialist republic.

An-225 Mriya was designed and built in Ukraine in the 1980s by the Antonov Corporation. The massive ship is 275 feet (84 meters) long, with a wingspan of 288 feet (88 meters) – almost twice the width of a traditional football field.

And it is capable of carrying a payload equivalent to ten battle tanks or about 418,000 pounds (189,601 kg).

The airport near Kyiv could play a key role for Russia to send more weapons to Ukraine.

In a statement retweeted by the Ukrainian president’s office, the country said: “We will restore the plane.

“We will fulfill our dream of a strong, free and democratic Ukraine.”

History of the largest aircraft in the world

It was originally designed by the Soviet Union when it controlled Ukraine as a socialist republic.

The plane has a rich history and was used in 1991 to bring two children, then aged 10 and 11, who were victims of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident in the United States for treatment.

The An-225 was once used to transport a Soviet space shuttle on the roof.

The plane also took a huge 117-ton electric generator from the Czech Republic in 2017 and delivered it to an aluminum ore mining company in Western Australia, where it will be used to power large wells and excavation machines.

Unloaded, the colossal An-225 Mriya can fly for up to 18 hours without stopping to charge.

The unloading phase of the generator on board can take up to 10 hours.

The plane carried the world’s longest air cargo in 2010, two 42.1-meter turbine blades from Tianjin, China, to Scridstrup, Denmark, according to the report.

And in 2011, the plane carried the heaviest single cargo sent by plane.

It was a generator for a gas-fired power plant in Armenia, weighing 189 tons.

In May 2016, more than 15,000 spectators came to Perth Airport in Western Australia to witness Mria’s arrival.

In 2018, the plane made a flying visit to the United Kingdom to deliver cargo to RAF Brize Norton before flying to Greece.

The aircraft operator has opened a new base at Stansted Airport, but the aircraft is a frequent visitor in the United Kingdom and around the world.

In 2020, the aircraft was used to transport medical supplies to Poland during the Covid-19 pandemic in Europe.

The An-124-Ruslan, a smaller version of the aircraft, appeared in Auckland in 2020 as it supplied new engines for Air New Zealand’s Dreamliner fleet.

In 2021, strong Ukrainian athletes tried to set a world record for towing a plane at an airport in the village of Hostomel near Kyiv, Ukraine.

The eight strong men improved on the previous record by pulling the plane by 4 meters 30 cm in 1 minute and 13 seconds.

The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, also known as Soviet Ukraine, is one of the constituent republics of the Soviet Union.

During the invasion, the plane could not fly to a safe place because it was under repair at the airport.

NASA’s Resource Management Fire Information System has detected numerous fires at the airport, including in the hangar where the plane is stored, CNN reports.

The fire broke out in the hangar where the plane is stored and was discovered at 11.13 local time on Sunday, according to NASA.

Ukroboronprom chief Yuri Gusev, 42, said: “The Russians destroyed the An-225” Dream “, it will be restored at the expense of the occupier

“Russian invaders destroyed the flagship of Ukrainian aviation – the legendary An-225” Dream “.

“It happened at Antonov Airport in Gostomel near Kyiv, where the plane was.

“Recovering it will cost more than $ 3 billion and will take a long time. Ukraine will make every effort to have this work paid for by the aggressor state.

“The invaders destroyed the plane, but they can’t destroy our common dream. She will certainly be reborn.

It is estimated that the cost of rebuilding the aircraft is over $ 3 billion over a period of more than five years.

He added: “Our task is to cover these costs by the Russian Federation, which has intentionally caused damage to Ukrainian aviation and the cargo aviation sector.

“Russia has destroyed our ‘dream’, but the dream of a free Ukraine from occupying Ukraine is impossible to destroy.

“We will fight for our land and our home to victory.”

The aircraft manufacturer, Antonov, said: “Currently, until the An-225 is inspected by experts, we cannot report on the technical condition of the aircraft.”

Antonov AN-225 Dream

The An-225 had a huge wingspan of nearly 290 feet wide and six engines and 32 wheels.

The AN-225 was the heaviest aircraft ever built and could carry up to 250 tons of cargo.

The unit price of Antonov’s AN-225 Mriya before its alleged damage today was between $ 200 million and $ 250 million.

An-225 Mriya can fly at a maximum speed of 850 km / h.

It had a wingspan of 88 meters (289 feet) and a length of 84 meters (276 feet), making it the longest aircraft available.

Its 43-meter (141-foot) cargo hold was 37 meters (121 feet) longer than the world’s first motorized flight by the Wright brothers in 1903.

At least six crews were needed: a pilot, a co-pilot, two flight engineers, a navigator and a radio operator. It is designed as a strategic air cargo plane.

It has a capacity of 70 passengers and was designed by Antonov’s design bureau in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union in the 1980s.

The Ukrainian plane, which was damaged on February 27 in a Russian shelling attack, was the only one left in operation.
