Portions of the crucial computer code that keeps Twitter running have been leaked online, the Elon Musk-led company said in a legal filing on Friday.

The public disclosure of the code came after the social media company took legal action to remove the leaked information from GitHub, an online software development platform, according to the New York Times.

GitHub agreed to remove the content immediately after Twitter sent a notice of copyright infringement, although it’s unclear how long the code was online.

The Times reported it appeared to have been public for several months.

A concern related to the leak is that the code contains security flaws that would allow hackers to steal user data or shut down the site, two people briefed on an internal investigation Twitter is conducting told the Times.

Twitter also asked a federal court to force GitHub to disclose who shared the code and identify everyone else who downloaded it, the filing says.

The internal investigation into the leak found that whoever published the code left the company last year as the leak was only recently brought to the attention of executives charged with the investigation, two people briefed on the investigation said. to the Times.

The leaker appeared to be running on GitHub under the name “FreeSpeechEnthusiast,” according to Twitter’s legal filings.

The profile, whose alias may refer to Musk calling himself a free speech absolutist, shows that the individual contributed to the site in early January.

Musk, who bought the company for $44 billion in October, has faced mountains of turmoil since becoming CEO of the social media giant.

Approximately 75% of the workforce that was employed prior to his acquisition has either been laid off or left.

The leak may have been online for months, the New York Times.AP reported

As the company faces major changes, Musk informed workers in a Friday email that Twitter was now worth about $20 billion, noting that mass layoffs and cost-cutting efforts saved the company from bankruptcy, according to an email seen by the Times.

“Twitter is undergoing a rapid transformation,” he said in the email, adding that he believes the company could one day be worth $250 billion.
