Skyler Astin – later from “Pitch Perfect” and recently a star of “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” – joined the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” in a recurring role. His arch will begin later this month, in the March 24 episode entitled “Put the Squeeze on Me.”
According to ABC officials, Astin will play Todd Eames, and they provided a logline for the character: “Charming and handsome with a tender soul, Eames has a doctorate in environmental sciences and loves a good spreadsheet. He is close to his sister, who is a pregnant patient at the Gray Sloan Memorial. Will he be a potential love interest for gynecology midwife Joe Wilson (Camilla Luddington), who so recently delayed her long-term situation with her best friend Link (Chris Carmack)? Who can say! ABC representatives were the mother on the issue.
Astin first became known as a musical theater actor as Georg in Spring Awakening. He played Jesse in “Pitch Perfect” (2012) and “Pitch Perfect 2”, and on television he was both in the much-loved “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”.
In its 18th season, “Gray’s Anatomy” continues to be ABC’s number one show in the demographic groups 18 to 49, one of the highest-rated dramas on television (among ratings networks) and was renewed in January for the 19th season – with original stars Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. all ready to return. In a recent interview with Variety, Kevin McKidd – who plays Owen Hunt from the show’s fifth season – said that while he didn’t know how long “Gray’s Anatomy” would last, “It feels like we’re somehow in the final chapter of the show.”
And in an interview last fall with Shonda Rhymes – who created Gray’s Anatomy and watched it until season 14, when she handed over the reins to current showrunner Christa Vernoff – she said she would be the key to deciding when it’s over.
“Am I the one who decides when the show is over?” Rhimes asked rhetorically. “Yes. And I take full responsibility for that when or if everyone gets mad at me.
