On Wednesday, the Austrian government introduced a new animal welfare law. There must be improvements in animal welfare. The law is now being revised and has not yet been approved by the National Council.

The law aims to improve animal welfare.

  • For example, when keeping animals. If a pigsty is newly built or converted, full slatted floors can no longer be used. A fully slatted floor is a floor with cracks. In pig pens, for example, the openings are almost 2 centimeters wide. Animals can often injure themselves in crevices.
  • There must be changes in the transport of animals. Animals can no longer be transported for that long. A maximum of 19 hours is still allowed.
  • Cattle can no longer be tied up continuously. This change will take effect in 2030. Until then, cattle can be tethered and grazed for at least 90 days.
  • There should be an animal welfare ombudsman in every Austrian province. This person ensures that animal welfare regulations are observed.
