Plane crash in Lac-Saint-Jean: Its eighty-year-old pilot died

Authorities recovered the body of an 83-year-old man more than 6pm after his microlight crashed near Girardville, Lac-Saint-Jean due to the hard-to-reach crash site.

A report was made to Sûreté du Québec (SQ) around 4 p.m. Thursday evening as we had not heard from the pilot since he flew from Chibougamau the previous day.

It was eventually the armed forces who discovered the plane had crashed around 4am on Friday morning near a camp in the woods only accessible by plane or helicopter.

While a first team could not land due to weather conditions and lack of fuel, it was another helicopter team that had to go to the scene around 11 a.m. and was able to confirm the incident.

The body of Germain Bilodeau, the 83-year-old pilot from Chibougamau, was discovered inside the plane.

“He was taken to the nearest hospital center but his death was quickly confirmed there,” said Christina Lopez, spokeswoman for the SQ.

No one else was involved in the tragic incident.
