Plane with 72 people on board crashes in Nepal

The plane was en route from the capital Kathmandu to Pokhara when it crashed with 72 people on board.

At least 16 people were killed when a plane carrying 72 people crashed in Nepal.

The plane was flying from the capital Kathmandu to Pokhara on Sunday when it crashed. Pokhara is a busy tourist town some 200 km (124 miles) west of Kathmandu.

The Nepalese Yeti Airlines twin-engine ATR 72 plane was carrying 72 people, including two infants, four crew members and 10 foreign nationals, said airline spokesman Sudarshan Bartaula.

“We expect more bodies to be recovered,” army spokesman Krishna Bhandari told Portal.

Local television showed thick black smoke billowing from the crash site as rescue workers and crowds gathered around the plane’s wreckage.

“The emergency services have already arrived there and are trying to extinguish the fire. All authorities are now concentrating on putting out the fire first and rescuing the passengers,” local official Gurudutta Dhakal said.

Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has called an emergency cabinet meeting after the plane crash, a government statement said.

In May, a Tara Air plane crashed less than 20 minutes after takeoff from Pokhara en route to Jomsom – a popular trekking and pilgrimage destination in Mustang district on the Tibetan border.

In 2018, a US-Bangla passenger plane from Bangladesh crashed on landing in Kathmandu, killing 49 of the 71 people on board.
