The man who hit the husband of the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, in the head with a hammer, should be charged with attempted murder. As the San Francisco prosecutor announced Saturday (local time), formal charges will be brought against the 42-year-old on Monday. The attacker broke into the couple’s San Francisco home on Friday and yelled “Where’s Nancy?” called.
He then hit the politician’s 82-year-old husband, Paul Pelosi, in the head, arm and hands with a hammer. Nancy Pelosi was in Washington at the time of the attack but flew to San Francisco to be with her husband after the attack.
Investigators are being assisted by FBI agents, San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said at a Friday night news conference. It is not yet known what prompted the home invasion. “We know it wasn’t an accident,” Scott said. The 42-year-old assailant entered the Pelosis home through a back door. Aerial photos showed broken glass at the back of the house. US President Joe Biden told reporters in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday that Pelosi’s husband is doing better and that the attack appears to have been directed at Nancy.
The incident happened about a week and a half before the November 8 midterm elections, fueling fears of political violence ahead of the vote. A good third of the Senate and the entire Chamber of Deputies will be re-elected. US President Democrats Biden and Pelosi currently have a majority in the House of Representatives but could lose them in the election and Pelosi with him her top job.
In terms of protocol, she is number three in the US after Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Pelosi is frequently criticized by Republicans and is often the target of verbal attacks.
