Planned Parenthood proposed against the Ana de Armas film Blonde, claiming it contributes to “anti-abortion propaganda” because it portrays a talking fetus.
In an interview with , Planned Parenthood official Caren Spruch said that the creators of Blonde “contribute to anti-abortion propaganda and instead stigmatize people’s health choices.”
In “Blonde,” Marilyn Monroe is shown having two forced abortions, dramatized by a CGI-rendered fetus.
The personified fetus is shown on screen asking Monroe, “You’re not going to hurt me this time, are you?”

“Because film and television are shaping many people’s understanding of sexual and reproductive health, it’s important that these portrayals accurately reflect women’s true choices and experiences,” Spruch said.
Monroe never publicly announced that she had an abortion, but at the time of her gargantuan success, it was common for film studios to arrange female actors “to rest” or have “appendectomy” while the studio arranged for them to have one terminate the pregnancy,” according to Entertainment Weekly.

While the film faced backlash for its hypersexualization of Monroe, Spruch had bigger issues with the “fetus that looks like a full-fledged baby… Planned Parenthood respects artistic license and artistic freedom.” However, false images only serve to reinforce misinformation and perpetuate the stigma surrounding sexual and reproductive health care.”

In an interview with The Wrap, director Andrew Dominik denied any underlying political message associated with this scene.
“You can see again and again that she is reacting to a story that she carries within herself,” says Dominik. “And I think that wanting to look at ‘Blonde’ through that Roe v Wade lens is that everyone else is doing the same thing. They have a certain agenda where they feel like women’s freedoms are being compromised and they look at Blonde and they see a demon but it’s not really about that. I think it’s very difficult for me People stepping out of the stories they’re carrying and seeing things of their own accord. And I think that’s really what film is about. The dangers that come with that. But you know, it’s difficult for people To keep two things in mind at once. It’s either black or white.”
