Players criticize field at Super Bowl LVII, saying it’s ‘like playing at a water park’

(CNN) Several players criticized the field at Super Bowl LVII after many struggled to stay on their feet in the Kansas City Chiefs’ 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Television cameras showed many players from both teams slipping during the game, including Eagles kick Jake Elliot, who avoided serious injury when his supporting leg fell out from under him during a kickoff.

And after the game ended, players and fans took to social media to complain about the quality of the turf at State Farm Stadium, suggesting it wasn’t up to the standard one would expect for the NFL’s biggest game.

“I’m not going to lie, it’s the worst field I’ve ever played on,” Eagles defenseman Haason Reddick told reporters.

Reddick added: “It was hard. I hit my husband a couple of times trying to turn the corner and just slipped.

“It was very disappointing. It’s the NFL, you’d think it would be better so we can play better. But it is what it is.”

Eagles star Jordan Mailata said the field was “terrible” and it was “like playing at a water park”.

Three-time Super Bowl winner offensive lineman Mark Schlereth called the field “absolute rubbish.” on twitter and said the NFL should be “absolutely embarrassed”.

CNN reached out to the NFL and State Farm Stadium for comment, but had received no response at the time of publication.

According to ESPN, the field at State Farm Stadium is made of a special blend of two species of Bermuda grasses and ryegrass called Tahoma 31. It’s the same turf used on many golf courses around the world.

Mahomes looks to beat the Eagles in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LVII.

According to the stadium’s website, the field is part of the first retractable natural-grass playing surface in North America and sits on a 40-inch-deep tray that’s 234 feet wide and 403 feet long. The field rolls on 546 steel wheels resting on 13 railroad-like tracks and covers the 740 feet inside or outside the stadium in about 70 minutes.

It had been rolled out every morning for daily sunshine two weeks before the Super Bowl.

State Farm Stadium has regularly hosted major sporting and other events, including the annual Fiesta Bowl.
