PlayStation Plus: prices rise, it will hurt players – Les Numériques

It’s called “Back to School,” and “Back to School” means a change in pricing policy. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on Wednesday, August 30th that it will increase the prices of PlayStation Plus subscriptions starting September 6th. “This price adjustment will allow us to continue to offer high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service,” the group warns in a press release.

As a reminder, PlayStation Plus allows access to free games and online multiplayer, use of discounts and exclusive content, and storage in the cloud, depending on the plan chosen.

Specifically, this increase only affects customers who have taken out an annual subscription. It will have an impact on the three offers. The basic PlayStation Plus Essential package increases from €59.99 to €71.99 per year, an increase of 20%. For the interim PlayStation Plus Extra offer, the price increases from €99.99 to €125.99, an increase of 26%. Finally, the premium offer increases from €119.99 to €151.99 (+26%).

The new pricing will only apply to those who are already subscribers on the next plan renewal date, starting November 6th. “However, any membership change made on or after September 6th, such as an upgrade, downgrade or purchase of additional time, will result in your plan being updated based on the new pricing,” Sony says.

After the PlayStation 5’s price increase of 50 euros a year ago, this is bad news for gamers who have to put their hands in their wallets to access their console’s online services.

On the first anniversary of the new PlayStation Plus service, Sony communicated the latest figures known to date last May. The group says 47 million players subscribe to PlayStation Plus, with 14.1 million opting for higher tiers. A figure well above the 30 million subscribers that Xbox Game Pass indicates, but not far from the old formula of the service, which could count on 48 million subscribers at the end of 2022 (the 3.2 million subscribers of PlayStation Now do not included). since then the simplified offer has been integrated).
