Poland and Hungary oppose asylum deal consultations

Poland and Hungary oppose asylum deal: consultations…

Deliberations at the EU summit ended without an agreement on the asylum dispute. Poland and Hungary blocked the talks in protest against the recently reached asylum deal.

Deliberations on migration at the EU summit in Brussels were suspended late on Friday with no result. The announcement was made by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to the media. Hungary and Poland are blocking the summit’s declaration after they were recently overruled in the interior ministers’ decision on the EU’s asylum and migration pact. Deliberations should resume at 9:30 am this Friday.

On the other hand, the summit made vague security commitments for Ukraine in the long-term future. Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) has clearly rejected demands from several heads of state and government for more binding “security guarantees for Ukraine” at the EU summit in Brussels. “For us, as neutral states, it is clear that this cannot exist,” he said on Thursday.
