Poland: Donald Tusk replaces entire secret service leadership zeit.de

A week after the change of government in Poland, new Prime Minister Donald Tusk replaced the entire leadership of the country's secret services. After consultations with the responsible commission and a statement from President Andrzej Duda, he decided to dismiss the heads of the CBA anti-corruption agency, the domestic and foreign intelligence services and the two military reconnaissance services, Tusk said.

The new head of the anti-corruption agency will be Agnieszka Kwiatkowska-Gurdak, and Colonel Rafal Syrysko will take over leadership of the national secret service. The current government parties accuse PiS, among other things, of using secret services to spy on their political opponents.

Tusk leads a pro-European three-party alliance of the former opposition, which won a government majority in October's parliamentary elections. Because the national conservative PiS, which has been in power since 2015, delayed the transfer of power, Tusk was only able to take office last week.

Poland's Prime Minister also announced that he would soon appoint a successor to police chief Jarosław Szymczyk. The general caused laughter across the country last December when he accidentally caused the explosion of a grenade launcher that his Ukrainian colleagues had given him as a gift at police headquarters. Szymczyk, a PiS favorite, remained in office anyway.
